We just keep on
growing and growing
With over 700 hotels, Premier Inn is now the biggest hotel brand in the UK. But how did we get here? It’s a story of huge ambition, rapid expansion and constant growth.
The chain started trading in 1987 as ‘Travel Inn’. In 2004, Whitbread acquired another hotel chain, Premier Lodge, for £505 million. This added an extra 141 hotels to the portfolio and Whitbread re-branded all of them as ‘Premier Travel Inn’.
Premier Travel Inn purchased 11 Holiday Inn hotels in 2006. In 2007, it purchased Golden Tulip UK, including six hotels trading in the UK under the Tulip Inn and Golden Tulip brands. All these hotels were re-branded and integrated into the business, which had now become known as ‘Premier Inn’. By this point, the chain accounted for more than 70% of Whitbread’s earnings.
2008 saw the purchase of 21 Express by Holiday Inn hotels. We then opened a further 117 hotels between 2010 and 2015.
We’ve set our sights even higher for the next five years. Our aim is to reach about 85,000 Premier Inn UK rooms by 2020, which would mean opening an incredible 200 new hotels. To make it happen, we plan to invest billions of pounds – and not just in opening and refurbishing sites but also in providing quality training and development, and finding new products and services that our customers will love.

Our international business will be a big growth area for us over the next five years. We’re looking to expand significantly in the Middle East, India and South East Asia, and are set to open our first hotels in Germany too.
